machines

from wasted space by the smallest one

about

based on a photograph i took on a slug-concentrated pathway in vancouver. a slug was cut in half, by what i imagine to be a bicycle, & another slug seemed rushing to its side.
i liked to think that these two were brother & sister, & as kids were constantly warned by their parents about the deadly machines humans have created and were so fond of.
the song is from the perspective of the sister slug, now an adult, looking back at the horror of witnessing her brother get cut in half by one of the heavy machines they'd thought their parents had simply made up.

lyrics

remember
all the old stories
that we were told,
to scare us
from their contraptions?
we thought
they were all just lies.

i never thought
we’d see these fictions
come to life.
i must admit:
i wish we listened,
now, as i look to the time

when i turned back,
& cried,
as you got caught
in its path.
you just weren’t fast
enough,
& that machine
split you in half.

& i died inside.
