Mason, this song means so much to us. The last lines get me every time, because she fought until her last breath. Couldn't have asked for a better tribute to our two favorite little bananas.
my two best friends (my dogs) passed away this year within three months of one another, both from heart failure, and this is a song of some of the memories of them.
lyrics
we got the call, & picked you up.
a frail little fox, a fragile pup.
& i know it was scary
being an orphan boy,
i just hope you know that you were loved.
we found you a friend, & brought her home,
so you wouldn’t have to spend the days alone.
&, though you got jealous, sometimes,
you’d always make up,
the way that family often does.
& how you’d freely run through fields,
not a rope to hold you back.
it was like witnessing euphoria
come to life, right in front
of our closed eyes.
we’d hide behind doors, & call her name.
& she wouldn’t rest ‘til we were saved.
& each time she found us,
it was like we’d been gone for years,
those happy, desperate eyes made clear.
then there was the time she ran away,
& we didn’t hear from her for days.
& when her cries, they echoed
through the front door,
we knew we were lucky she was okay.
so then when her lungs ran out of air,
your strong little heart just couldn’t bear.
& it’s not your ashes in my closet,
in the box, that you’ll float on—
no, it’s the memories you left us.
& now you visit me in dreams;
& i’m not concerned with what it means.
all i know is when i wake up,
& you’re not there,
i want my eyes
to take me back
where you’re alive.
