someday (ver. 2)

from afterglow (b-sides) by the smallest one

about

technically, this was version 1 of 'someday', which i actually recorded in 2018, around the time i released 'on a sailboat'. it didn't seem to fit anywhere on any of the projects i released in 2019, but it was very thematically relevant to 'afterglow'. after recording the title track first for the album, this version still felt a bit off, so i recorded the version that ended up on the album. however, it was very difficult choosing between the two versions, so i left it up to my friend's (dylan stack) opinion.

lyrics

settle down, it’s over now
the mother you’ve cared for
she’s suffered far too long
now she’s gone, & you can’t seem

to move on—no, you can’t stop
driving to the hospital
surprised each time the room
is full of red-eyed strangers

you never thought you’d feel so lost
that the love you gave would always
save you from the rain your crazy
brain would always rinse out

but you can’t sit still without the chill
of knowing, someday, you’ll look
into the mirror—you’ll see her
you’ll be her, yes, you will
